Program
Written:
The written program provides access to the on-line curriculum, an initial Baseline MCQ exam, a 1 ½ day Written Tutorial Workshop with 3.5 hour sessions in the 3 main areas of practice provided by experienced clinicians and a second 100 MCQ exam . These will be held on the UBC campus. The final MCQ exam may be couriered to allied invigilators in other areas of BC.
The current on-line curriculum includes 5 clinical modules with glossaries and self-study questions, an MCQ exam skills module and textbook list.
By July 2011, it is anticipated that the program will be delivered on-line with one face-to-face practice 100 MCQ Examination provided at the end of the preparation period. On-line additions will include an MCQ exam, module quizzes, on-line workshops, a mentor resource list and discussion board for IEPs.
Practical:
The practical program provides a Baseline OSCE examination consisting of 8 x 5-minute stations and individual feedback with each examiner to follow; a one day Clinical Lab Day with the opportunity to work with our experienced clinician/ tutors and a Final OSCE based on the PNE format with a total of 8 stations : 4 x 10 minutes and 4 x 5minute clinical + 5 minute written component stations followed by an individual review with each examiner
Participants are also given access to the on-line curriculum for the duration of the program.
Outcomes:
The IEP Program has been very successful since its inception in July 2008, in assisting internationally-educated Physical Therapists coming to British Columbia to complete the national Physiotherapy Competency Examination and enter Physical Therapy practice.
Written Program:
Twenty-nine (29) IEPs participated in 9 cohorts up to and including the July 2010 QE.
Twenty-one (21) passed which represents a 72.4% pass rate for the written examination (QE )versus the national average for IEPs from 2007-2009 of 53.5%. The national average for Canadian MPTs is 93.5%.
Practical Program:
Forty-seven (47) IEPs participated in 4 cohorts up to and including June 2010.
Forty-four (44) passed the Physiotherapy National Examination and successfully entered physiotherapy practice in British Columbia. This 93.6% pass rate far surpasses the national average of 65.9% for IEPs from 2007-2009 and approaches the average for Canadian MPTs at 95.3%.
Waiver:
The IEP Program does not guarantee success in passing the Canadian PCE. This is a self –directed study program with a curriculum, guidance, resources and practice examinations provided, individual outcomes may vary.
